COURSE INFORMATION

Winter 1998

Course Objectives: The primary object is to understand the basic principles of probabaility theory and statistical inference. A secondary objective is to learn how to apply some important statistical techniques to data sets.
 
Written Work:  Percent of Grade
Eleven Problem Sets 40%
One Midterm 20%
Final Examination 40%
Note: However, a good final examination may be counted more.
 
Problem Sets: Students may form homework teams of size at most three. In such cases, each team should turn in one solution set, and the names of all members of the team should be on the solution set.

Prerequisites: Math 116

Desirable: Working knowledge of a package of statistical subroutine (for example, Mystat, SPSS) or working knowledge of a good spreadsheet (for example, Excel).
